Short Story: Claudia and Quentin meet.....

She sees him.

The heat rose from the swamp amidst the towering weeping willows. It is always hot this time of year in Bon Temps, Louisiana, but today there was something else in the air, something burning, and Claudia could smell it.

She was resting her lean, wet body on a tree above the lake, drying off from her daily swim in the Bayou, when she heard it…or rather felt it. The strongest urge came over her. She looked around and saw something gleaming in the distance, on the riverbank.  She moved to investigate it. As she got closer the visions became clearer, her feelings and thoughts more defined. Whatever this was, she could feel it in her entire body and mind, as if it was her own. But she knew it wasn’t.

She Saves Him.

She moved stealthily towards it and then she saw it.  Smoke and wisps of steam were rising from its still body. It appeared to be unconscious.  Claudia immediately knew what it was, although she had never seen one in the flesh before. Excited she knelt beside the body and started to peel away the silver chains that were melting away the creature’s dead skin. Hillbillies from Bon Temps regularly kidnapped and tortured those of the supernatural realm.  It gave them a sense of power that they didn’t have in any other part of their lives. Preying on the weaknesses of the supernatural was the only way they could get away with their innate desire for cruelty.   Their victims were often found dead, or nearly so, by hapless humans but this was the first time one of their ‘victims’ was left in her territory.

She looked him over carefully. She knew the creature was still alive by the dream visions she was picking up from him in her mind. The creature was obviously male, and attractive in a strange kind of way, she thought. She knew that he would die out here, exposed to the sunlight, if she didn’t help him quickly so she glanced around her for something sharp. She found a thin sliver of wood and opened a vein in her wrist. Once the blood started to flow she held it to the creature’s lips and he stirred slightly. The wisps of smoke abated and his white skin healed immediately. She had to act quickly now so she dragged him back to her cabin. He was surprisingly light, perhaps because he wasn’t actually human, she decided. Knowing that he needed darkness to survive, she tied him up in her basement and waited for him to awake.

Claudia. (Slipping)

Claudia had lived alone since childhood. She was abandoned by her parents and left in their old plantation property with its surrounding 5 acres of land. The land consisted mainly of the Bayou but that was perfect for Claudia. She was half Nymph, on her mother’s side, so she needed the water. This hereditary gene gave her many gifts. She was able to manipulate emotions, read minds, control the water element and the creatures that lived in it too. She was safe in her bayou and only left when absolutely necessary, which, so far, meant never.
She had been isolated from other humans for most of her life and had gotten used to being alone, only occasionally seeing her nearest Neighbour Mrs Laderman. Mrs. Laderman was a widow and since her husband had died had also lived alone for a long time, so Claudia and she shared a basic understanding of one other.

Claudia’s isolation had led her to find solace in old movies. She would pretend that she was the leading lady and she created alternate universes where she would discover her leading man. This obsessive longing had led her to develop many dysfunctional disorders as a result. Mild Schizophrenia being one of Them. The lines between reality and fantasy were no longer clear to her.

They Meet.

Claudia returned to the basement a few hours later to check on her rescuee. She could feel the Being’s thoughts becoming clearer and she knew that he would awaken shortly. When he finally opened his eyes he was shocked to find himself in this strange basement and he wondered how he got there. He wasn’t aware of her watching him but as he looked around to see where he was he spotted a beautiful creature emerging from the darkness. She wasn’t afraid of him and he could feel her curiosity rising.

They stared at each other without speaking. Each could feel the energy of the other and he knew that this beautiful woman was not entirely human, although he could not ascertain in what way she was not.

Claudia explained how she had found him lying by the water, tied up with silver and how she had rescued him. She talked of how his thoughts and dreams had fed her curiosity and that she had decided that she would wait for him to wake up so she could get a clearer feeling of him.

‘What are you?’ the Vampire Quentin, staring at her in confusion. “You are human, but not human. I cannot make you out.”

She cautiously explained her story, about her Nymph mother and Human father. Quentin was fascinated. Perhaps that was why he had felt no desire to feed from her. It also excited him. She was the first women/being that could control him, hurt him if she wanted to…since his Maker. She was the first woman who he could not control. He knew that glamouring her would be impossible. She would never be a victim of his.  She was stronger than him, and this made him want her more. It was the first time he had ever wanted a woman in this way.

Quentin. (Taste)

Quentin grew up in New Orleans. He was the son of a voodoo priestess mother, and was abandoned by his white father when he was barely two years old. As a result of her husband abandoning her his mother became very over-protective, keeping him isolated from regular humans, by living deep in the seedy underworld of New Orleans. He grew up around Vampire Brothels, and the opium dens of those Supernatural beings who could not come to terms with normal life. As a result of this contact he found his freedom in the shape of his vampire mistress. She was a regular visitor to the local vampire brothels and she hypnotised him. He became her child and she took him away from his mother. But in gaining his freedom he also lost it, for she was a harsh Maker and as a result his anger toward women grew until all he desired was their blood, and their death. He spent many years learning how to control women in order to get what he wanted, choosing vulnerable, needy women who he glamoured, and used, until he had had his fill. He thrived on devouring their needs, their flesh and their blood, leaving them like dried husks in the dirt.  He was insatiable.

The Hillbillies caught him off-guard, suspecting that he had been having an affair with one of their wives. They had come prepared, with silver chains to bind him. The husband rallied his friends, and together they dragged him into their pick-up truck in the early morning before sunrise. They had spent the evening drinking, riling themselves up, preparing themselves for the attack. Then they left the bar and grill and drank around in a drunken noise until they found him. They dragged him into the truck, tied the silver chain tightly around his neck and began to drain him of his blood, but just enough to keep him weak. Then, as the sun came up and Quentin was helpless they threw him out of the truck and onto the river bank where Claudia later discovered him.

Bonded Forever.

And this is how it started. They each saw what they wanted to see. However, their relationship would never be a healthy one. Quentin was a vampire and could come and go as he pleased. He was lustful and selfish but he could never leave her. He would always want her because she was the only one who knew him and his weaknesses. And Claudia was addicted to him. He was the only ‘man’ she had ever met that she actually wanted and he knew it. The power struggle and obsessive, co-dependent quality of their relationship was unbearable but living without each other was worse. They manipulated each other and punished each other but that was the only way they knew how to be together.

Eventually it would destroy them both.

Final look and outcome for Quentin

Final look for Quentin:

For my final look I chose to make Quentin still approachable as Vampires are in True Blood. The vampire Characters in True Blood look like regular people as they are meant to be attempting to fit into normal society. I feel that the True Blood creators created them this way in order to distance them from previous vampire characters. They want you to focus on them as two halves. One side of them fits in and has a human side. This side of them can have relationships with humans and can in most circumstances live a integrated life. The other side to them is dark and lives in the shadows, can prey on humans and control there emotions and actions. They can manipulate and over power them. I wanted to keep my character very human looking. I wanted him to look like everyone else, and the only way you knew he was a vampire, was his pale skin and allergic reaction to silver and avoidance of sunlight. I'm really happy with the outcome of my Quentin character and how my design came to life.

Tools and products used:
  1. Baby wipes. Cleanser, toner and wipes.
  2. cotton buds, pads and tissues.
  3. Palette Knife
  4. Paint brushes stipple sponge and makeup brushes
  5. Translucent powder
  6. Supra colour palette Kryolan
  7. Kryolan Foundation palette
  8. Bruise wheel
  9. Fake Blood
  10. Cinewax
  11. Afro comb
  12. Section comb
  13. Water spray

Application:
  1. I began by cleaning around the neck of my model ben to prepare for the Cinewax.
  2. I then began warming up the Cinewax with my palette knife. I then applied this to the area of Ben's neck and smoothed the edges down. I then tacked it to make it look like a burn.
  3. Once it was to the shape of my liking I applied translucent powder to set it. I put a lot on as I wanted a dry surface to paint on.
  4. I then started to colour it. It was supposed to be a burn look from a silver necklace so I looked at photo's of burns for reference. I also looked at photo's of true blood to see what there silver burns looked like.
  5. I also used a stipple sponge to create a more realistic look.
  6. I then added a bit of blood to create a better colour.
  7. Once I was happy with the burn I then began applying my lightest foundation to Ben's body and used the darker shade to contour Ben's Muscles.
  8. I did the same to Ben's face and used my concealer palette to even his skin tone.
  9. I then combed his hair and sprayed it with water and messed it up. I wanted Ben's hair to be in its natural state But messy as he had been left laying there.

Outcome:

Im really happy with how this design came out and how Ben looked. I think that both of my character 's looks look really good together and this definitely comes across in the final images. I feel that the research I put into designing Ben's look has been really beneficial. I feel that He fits perfectly into True Blood and the culture of Louisiana and I think Ben's Different look was perfect for the character of Quentin. I wanted to keep his look quite natural and stripped back so he could blend in with the cast. I feel that I have been successful with this. I also wanted to approach the look of 'the vampire' differently as this look has been done so many times and its always gory. I like the style of vampire in true blood and I'm really Pleased with the outcome of the character development and final design.

The codependant relationship and how its played out on the screen

"Codependency: Co-dependency is a learned behavior that can be passed down from one generation to another. It is an emotional and behavioral condition that affects an individual’s ability to have a healthy, mutually satisfying relationship. It is also known as “relationship addiction” because people with codependency often form or maintain relationships that are one-sided, emotionally destructive and/or abusive. The disorder was first identified about ten years ago as the result of years of studying interpersonal relationships in families of alcoholics. Co-dependent behavior is learned by watching and imitating other family members who display this type of behavior."

Firstly, this can be a heavy subject but I feel that it is such a wide spread issue that can effect us in so many ways. It can be shown to us unknowingly with everything we see and watch, especially on television. I felt it was very relevant to my chosen TV show that I am currently researching, as this seems to be a constant theme in the main character’s relationships. This is also relevant to the relationship I am creating for it, and in this post I will explain why I think so.

I learned a lot about Codependency and love addiction through my own relationships and personal growth. I read ‘Women, Sex and Addiction’ when I was 24, as I needed a deeper understanding of why I behaved the way I do in my own personal relationships and why I find my self in the same cycle. The one thing I noticed, when I had finished this book, is how often the dynamics of many relationships showed these issues and how common these types of relationships were. Once I had read the book, and others, I noticed that these kinds of relationships are fed to us and glamourised all the time. The media headlines and articles constantly give us subliminal messages about rescuing each other, being one’s knight in shining armor, 'can’t live without you’ types of relationships etc. These are sometimes romantic story lines, which can have happy endings, but most of the time, it’s replaying this fantasy idea that you cannot be happy without 'the one'.

It is constantly the subject of conversation and given to us as our life long goal. We have to find 'the one' and be happy. We are taught that you will be incomplete if you end up alone. We are also taught how to keep relationships like this, and how giving you up, to fill up the other person, is usually the only answer.

Of course this isn't the root of where our issues come from but I do feel that the media does not help when trying to grow away from this unrealistic and unnecessary idea. From reading this book I learned of how many of us actually have these tendencies and where they are usually learned. It can be any type of missing piece from your child hood, anything that has created a hole that you feel compelled to fill. It can also be learned behaviour from another family member who has the same issue. It travels through the generations and can be more serious and develop into more serious addictions like sex, drugs and alcohol etc.

Of course not many people are aware of this common issue and fail to recognize the impact the media and TV shows have on it, and also how common a theme it appears to be on TV. Television has changed dramatically over the past 10 years. It is not  dissimilar to soft pornography and personally I wouldn't disagree. I have watched True Blood and I love the show. I love the passion and the electricity between the characters and the fantasy storylines, but I have found myself awkwardly sitting next to my mum, watching a pretty raunchy scene, feeling extremely awkward, and not really understanding why there are 50 couple's having sex in the middle of Sookie's garden. I'm of course referring to season 2 with the crazy Maenad Lady Maryann. This is one of many explicit scenes. I don't mind sex scenes of course, I'm not a prude but I feel they have come a long way from subtle. This oversexed theme that is so overbearing in these shows is keeping the focus on the idea that sex is the main part of the relationship.
I have, as many other viewers have, seen the crazy number of people latch on to these shows because of this raunchiness, and I always wonder why.

I think, maybe it’s almost a way of working out our urges and issues by watching other people work out theirs. Living vicariously through them and living in a fantasy for the short time of the episode. I feel sometimes that these shows almost act as an enabler to the viewer. Because there are so many of these shows around and they are so popular and filled with so much sex and violence, it starts to normalize it. The viewer loves the excitement and drama and loves to watch the incredibly dysfunctional relationships implode, and recover, only to implode again. It brings me back to what I was talking about earlier. These types of relationships are incredibly codependent and dysfunctional, but because it’s so normalized it makes it harder to recognize the problem. It is feeding us the same unhealthy message and pulls on our urges and dreams of the romantic passionate relationship

With this research I want to create a believable relationship between Quentin and Claudia. I think that  not only will this information help with building my characters, It will also help the characters fit into True Blood in a believable way. This was really helpful when writing my story and delving deeper into their issues with themselves and each other.

The wet look Hair, makeup and body

For my Claudia look I want to design a wet look to match her half Nymph half mortal Species. I am shooting on location and will be shooting a sequence where Claudia is drying off from her nightly swim. Its morning and she senses someone close by. She saves Quentin as he has been left for dead out in the sun light. I want her to look like she has just come from the water, so Im creating a wet look combining the skills I gained in Sues class. I want to use the sweat and pallor technique to create a wet look. In class we used Glycerin but I want to use baby oil. Glycerin can be very sticky and messy and can sting near the eyes. I find it quite hard to work with. Baby oil is a lot easier to manage and isn't sticky. It also gives a beautiful wet, glistening look to the skin, which is what I want Claudia to have.
I also was looking into makeup for Claudia. True Blood's characters aren't shocking. The makeup is kept very southern. The supernatural characters look normal most of the time and I definitely want Claudia to look like any normal girl, but that has secret gifts similar to that of the other characters on the show. I feel that this is a very important aspect to the series. This is what makes the show so Identifiable. Also my final Images portray Claudia in the way she see's herself. I wanted the whole design of her and Quentin to be what she see's through her eyes. Even though they have a quite dysfunctional and addictive relationship, Claudia is in denial about this, so see's and remembers her and Quentin's meeting and further encounters her own way. Through rose coloured glasses. Her appearance in my final images is her representation.

I have found some images that have inspired my Claudia Design. This has really inspired my makeup and hair design as I want it really shiny and glossy. The hair I definitely want to play with as I feel I could create a really interesting design just by playing with the wet hair and creating shapes on the body with it.

I dont want to use bright colours though, as this doesn't fit my character. I want something a bit more mysterious looking. I think also, that because her surrounding landscape plays such a big part in her life, I want her makeup to reflect that. I want the colours to blend in with the landscape. I think it will make her look more animalistic that she is camouflaged with her environment. Like a sea creature is with the sea and a land animal is with the land that it inhabits. Below is a small mood board reflecting my desired colour palette.

Claudia Face charts

I had three designs for my Claudia character. I wanted to keep with the same colour palette but play with the arrangement on my models face and see what best suited my character and what was the most practical for her environment. It was important to me that her makeup was an extension of her character. Claudia is a woman who lives in her own head a lot and has created her own world within her environment. However she is still connected to the outside world, through the other characters she  associates with. I wanted her to look to the audience as the woman she sees herself to be. She is very mysterious to everyone and I also wanted to portray this. This represented with the dark colour palette I used. Dark contouring, Dark eyes, nude wet lips, and a lot of shadows. I knew by the second design that I wanted her hair to be wet and her skin to be wet also. I think this represents her being able to live in both water and land. I thought also that wet hair and skin, sweat and hot look has always been a seductive tool for the true blood creators. I feel it adds to the sexy feel of the show and works with the climate.

Design 1:

I was playing with shapes around the eye for this design. I definitely wanted to make the make up more characteristic as this is a great way to portray her personality on the outside. I love the colour palette with this but I feel that this look is too 'neat' and reminds me of an application you might see on Instagram, which isn't what I wanted. The eye shadow split near the outer corner is too detailed for the look I wanted so I think I will play with a lot of shading in my next design!

Design 2:

I'm really pleased with this design. I love the woodland feel to this makeup. I definitely feel the 'nymph' part of her in this. I love the contouring in this design and feel this is a great way of bringing out my models features as she has great cheek bones. I have to say though that I don't like the dark lips with this design as I don't feel its very practical for my character. I feel that it makes her character look really obviously dark, when I have designed her character to be beautiful and soft looking on the outside but with darkness in her psyche that is portrayed in expressions. I also want the look to be somewhat natural and wet looking. Focusing on glossy makeup all over the face and body. I do think I will use this though but I will change the lips to a nude gloss. I think that will create a softer look and also look more Nymph like.

Design 3:

I love this look a lot. I love the blending and think this would look beautiful on my model, however I do feel this is too mainstream and modern and I do want my character to look other worldly. I will take the nude lips and add them to my 4th and final design, now that I know what I want my final design to look like. I will have a look for some more inspiration to finalise my end design.

I'm happy with the progress Im making with this character. I feel that I'm on the right track and getting closer to my final character design.

Vampire research

Ive always loved watching Vampire movies. My favourite has always been interview with a vampire. I like the fact that it has focused on them being animals and lustful creatures, that suck the life out of humans. I feel that it covers a lot of ground and runs through different eras so that you can get a feel of how they have lived for so long. I love the moral conflict and how the realities of being a vampire, good and bad are exposed with the characters and there different situations. I definitely like this look too as this is classically the vampire look but they are still very good looking and affluent. I will use this for a reference when designing my vampire Quentin because of the New Orleans locations and romantic lighting and backdrop. I love the old feel to this.

Another example is the Twilight franchise. I must admit that when I first watched it I loved it. I was younger and loved how they modernised the classic vampire look and really integrated them into society. The don't burn in the sun they sparkle. They don't feed off of humans but animals they hunt. The are morally good and fight for whats right. There are rules that they have to follow. I liked that the vampire and supernatural aspect was secondary and the relationship was the the main focus. I think it gave the subject a different modern feel.

Blade 1,2,3:

This is a great example of a vampire movie. Its action packed and modern but dark and takes a gory turn when a pack of vampires set out to make a breed of new pure vampires. The leader of this pack is German and feels like a reference to the second war war. I really like the edge to this movie and the second. I love the no nonsense and no romance look at the vampire. The main man Wesley Snipes is a powerful lead and his half mortal and half vampire self is out to rid the world of vampires to avenge his mothers death.

Dracula:

After a Solicitor Jonathan(Keanu Reeves) comes to Transylvania to visit Dracula (Gary Oldman) and manage some property business for him, Dracula sets off to seduce his fiance (Winona Ryder). He believe's she is the reincarnation of his wife who committed suicide years earlier. He leaves terror in his wake and tries to make Mina (Winona Ryder) His vampire bride. I love this story for its eerynature and the locations and set design. It feels very close to the original story and goes a little deeper into the meaning of how Dracula came to be. It has a romance side but also tragedy and deals with the scorned man and revenge. Really enjoyed watching this classic.

The lost Boys:

This is an absolute classic. It takes the 80's teen movies to the next level with a teen vampire gang roaming the streets at night. The main character Sam (Corey Haim) has to save his brother Michael (Jason Patric) from being turned into a vampire by his new friends. With a strong cast and Tantric Score this is an Iconic version of the vampire legend. This is one of my favourites I love the interwoven relationships and the teen aspect. Its the classic Teen movie with a twist.

Research for my quentin/vampire character.

For quentin's character I have chosen a vampire. With his background he is from New Orleans originally and has had quite a hard background and upbringing around the dark arts and underground world of New Orleans. I want him to look slightly bohemian and like a classic vampire lothario. I have a few images that have inspired my final look. I want him to look dreamy and so I want him to have a feeling of his background with him in the image. Ben my model has a really unique look so I had a look for images that I think work for him.

These are a collection of images. I have the injury ones for inspiration for the injury I'm going to apply to bens skin. I also have the New Orleans historical Photo as Inspiration. I also love the bohemian styled man with the curly hair as this is how I want Ben's hair for the shoot. I love the natural state of it and I think it would be a good contrast with my Claudia's wet hair.
